Biodiversity is the richness of species within an ecosystem.  A high level of biodiversity generally means the ecosystem has mild conditions with lots of resources.  Rainforests for example have very high biodiversity. Deserts, which have much more harsh conditions, often have lower levels of biodiversity.

Biodiversity can also be a sign of a healthy ecosystem.  Fresh water quality would encourage biodiversity.  Polluted waters would likely have less biodiversity.
