The gestation is the period between fertilization and birth.  Mammals often have longer gestation periods than other species.  Mammalian life spans and generation times are longer than other more primitive species.  They often have fewer offspring and provide more parental care.  Their complexity also requires longer gestation periods to ensure development to sustain survival outside of the womb.
