They are classed by

1. Conditionally pathogenic (or if they are in the right place at the right time)

2. Intracellular (or within the cell)

3. By location (where they are found)

4.  Basic laboratory characteristics (what you see under a microscope)

5. Clinical characteristics (what you would see in someone or some animal with this microbe)
