DNA replication is the process which occurs before a cell divides. The process preserves, conserves and transmits all of the genetic information from one generation of cells to the next.

During the replication process, the entire genome (all of the DNA) is copied. With 2 copies in a single cell, the cell can divide and leave one full copy in each of its daughter cells.  Hope that helps. Comment if you still don't understand.
