an autotroph can produce it's own energy usually by photosynthesis and does not need to rely on energy consumed from other organisms.  Most all plants are good examples of autotrophs.

Autotrophs are organisms that can produce their own food from inorganic substances and get energy from sunlight or certain chemicals.

Many plants and some bacteria and algae are autotrophs.
