A frameshift mutation results from the deletion of 1 or more bases (but not any multiple of 3) from a gene. From the point of the deletion, the amino acid sequence coded for is completely altered from the "normal" gene. One can illustrate the effect of a frameshift mutation in the following way:

A frameshift mutation changes the reading of the bases. If a base is inserted or deleted the 3 base rreadinf is shifted. The result can be ctastrophic. Because every amino acid from the point of the mutation has changed the protein can be rendered useless
