This theory proposes that mitochondria were in fact free living organism which existed independent from any other cellular system. by the process of phagocytosis, i.e. one cell consuming another cell, the mitochondria became a function part of the eukaryotic cellular system.

Some evidence for this theory can be found in the fact that the mitochondria has it's own membrane structure and DNA which differs from the DNA found in the nucleus of the cell.
