What causes ice out on lakes, does the ice sink and what makes that happen

Ice goes off the lakes in Minnesota about this time, where does it go

Ice is a solid form of water.  Water freezes at 0 degree C (32 degrees F).  As the temprature increases the ice melts and turns from a solid (ice) to a liquid (water).

Water is rare in that the soild form is less dense then the liquid form.  This means ice floats on water instead of sinking.
