Organisms in higher trophic levels simply don't have any predators. They are often large in physical size and few in population size. They generally have long lifespan in which they consume great amounts of energy. Since nearly all energy comes from the sun through primary producers and photosynthesis (with a few exceptions). There is simply a limited amount of energy to sustain higher trophic levels. Larger animals like sharks and whales for example require huge amounts of energy to sustain themselves. They have few if any predators and their population sizes are relatively small and generation times are relatively long. They are found at the top of the food chain at the highest trophic levels.
