Genetic drift describes the random changes in the gene pool of a species over time. Sometimes, simply by chance, genetic drift can cause an allele (version of a gene) will disappear completely from a population simply by chance. This can lead to decreased variability within the population.  Even if alleles do not disappear completely them may become more common or more rare due to the process of genetic drift.
