In most cases organisms must be photosynthetic to make their own energy. They must be primary producers and have chlorophyll.  There are many species of bacteria which are photosynthetic. There are some rare cases of extremophiles who produced their own energy in other was without the presence of light or oxygen in some cases. These are often found in the deep ocean or in deep caves where there is no light or other source of energy.
