Endocytosis is the taking into a cell of molecules or particles from the outside by the formation of a vesicle from the plasma membrane. Phagocytosis is just an extreme form of endocytosis. A process known as "receptor-mediated" endocytosis is where molecules are bound by receptors in the plasma membrane. These receptors then cluster together and are incorporated into vesicles as the membrane pinches off.
