I think you might be referring to dye added to water.  This is a common experiment to show the principle of diffusion.

The picture below is an example. The flower stem is cut in half.  Half placed in clear water and half placed in red dyed water.

Diffusion carries the water from the stem into the flower.  Half of the flower turns red/pink in this case and half stays white.

The water from each glass is carried from the stem of the flower to the flower by diffusion turning half of the flower red
