Plants are primary producers.  They and other photosynthetic organisms are at the base of the food chain/web. They convert energy from the sun into glucose through photosynthesis.  The types of plants in a given biome will determine the energy capacity for the biome.  Areas with a high plant density for example jungles and forests often have greater biodiversity as there is a larger amount of energy available to sustain larger and more diverse populations.  This leads to a greater number of consumer, often animals of various species. Areas where plant life is limited such as deserts may often have much more limited biodiversity because of limited energy from primary producers to support a larger and more diverse food web.  Environmental conditions in these types of habitats also has an effect on both plant and animal life.
