Active transport requires energy to transport materials across the cell membrane. The most common example is the sodium patasium ion pump.  This transports both sodium and potassium across the cell membrane against their concentration gradients.  In other words from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.  Here is a graphic.  Notice the ATP energy required in this process.

The sodium potassium ion pump moves sodium and potassium across the cell membrane against their concentration gradients.
